And the saga continues. Obviously, as I'm now well into the series, you should not click on the link to continue unless you have (a) read the book or (b) don't mind complete spoilers. My biggest surprises ahead...
Ok, so first of all, there was way more death in this book - and of major characters at that! But overall here were the plot points that surprised me the most:
1. OMG Tyrion kills Tywin! While Tywin is on the toilet!
2. The revelation that Tyrion's first wife was actually just his wife; she wasn't a whore planted by his father as he had been led to believe his whole life.
3. That Tyrion lies to Jamie and tells him he did indeed kill Joffrey when in fact he had no role in his death (he said this after finding out about his first wife, but still, probably a bad move, all things considered).
4. That we actually start to see some humanity in Jamie, for example, when he goes back to rescue Brienne when she is facing certain death (and likely a group rape beforehand). He also rescues Tyrion from his death sentence.
5. OMG Robb Stark is killed (along with his direwolf) at the wedding of his uncle to one of the Frey's.
6. OMG Catelyn Stark is killed at the same wedding.
7. OMG Catelyn is alive?!? Or something? See last chapter of the book.
8. Arya is embarking on an epic journey - I wonder if we'll ever see it's conclusion. And part of it is with Sandor Clegane?!
9. Dany has become "mother" to all of the slaves she frees along her journey. She is also betrayed by Jorah Mormont, who she finds out has been spying on her for Varys, and dismisses him from her service. Ser Barristan, dismissed by Joffrey for his age, has also covertly joined her forces and is ultimately accepted by Dany (good move). Interesting that she decides to settle in Meereen to learn how to rule and attempt not to leave behind cities of destruction and waste after her conquer.
10. Stannis comes to the aid of the Night's Watch!
11. Stannis wants Jon Snow to take over the title of Winterfell (and Jon considers it).
12. Jon is elected as the head of the Night's Watch (by plan of Sam) thereby destroying Stannis' plan! But yay for the Night's Watch!
13. Sam knows that Bran is alive and traveling north of the wall. But he keeps his word and doesn't tell Jon. At least someone finally knows he is alive!
14. That Shae betrayed Tyrion so thoroughly. I really thought she would stand by him. I was sorry for him - though of course he ended up killing her before he killed his father. Revenge is sweet.
I'm sure there were more things that surprised me along the way but those were at least most of the major ones. I continue to be riveted by this series - absolutely love it. It makes me wonder if there are other fantasy series out there that I should read... though I should probably start with the classic, Lord of the Rings, which I still haven't read.
