Hook's Revenge - Heidi Schulz

Date Started: 12/30/14
Date Finished: 1/4/15

This is a truly inventive story, wherein we find out that Captain James Hook had a child (Jocelyn) who is in the midst of an identity crisis of sorts when her inheritance, to avenge her father's death, is discovered.

One of the interesting elements of this story is the voice of the narrator - a crotchety old person (who is quite funny) but whose identity we never discover. I actually would have liked to peek behind that curtain but I enjoyed the narrator's participation in any case.

Jocelyn is out of sorts, having just been sent to a boarding school where ladies learn manners. She befriends Roger, a jack-of-all-trades boy, who ultimately gets discharged from the school by virtue of his relationship with her (friendship). At this point Jocelyn receives a letter from her deceased father extorting her to kill the crocodile that finished him off. So off to Neverland she goes.

I loved the description of Neverland - the changing island - that the author gives us. It's more robust than any other picture we've seen. Jocelyn gets in her fair share of scrapes but manages to solve her problems on her own - truly an accomplishment when you consider she was almost eaten by a tribe of cannibals. Jocelyn learns to rely on herself and her skills - and what an important lesson for any reader. Looking back on my younger self, I imagine that I would have loved this book, as I'm sure many others are enjoying it now.
