Mansfield Park - Jane Austen

Date Started: 11/20/12
Date Finished: 12/9/12

Ah, one of the remaining Jane Austen books that I had yet to read. I had to tackle it! It was 100% what one expects from a Jane Austen story - romance, class issues, family parties, intrigue, betrayal and finally a happy ending.

I won't opine too much on the plot of the story except to say that it is clear from the start that Fanny will end up with Edmund, we just have to see how they get there. And, as is typical, the story is drawn-out over many pages until we finally hit the denouement - Henry Crawford, who has been declaring his undying love to Fanny, has now run off with her married cousin, disgracing the family and throwing everything into disarray. It is this final piece that undoes Mary Crawford's efforts to ensnare Edmund, as their differing opinions on the act itself clearly show him her true character (which Fanny has known all along). And so, Fanny and Edmund live happily ever after, in close proximity to Mansfield Park.

I will say this for Jane Austen, you can count on her for your happy endings. What else is there to add? I loved it, of course, as I love all of her books. Yes, they follow a pattern, yes, they are predictable, but sometimes that's not such a bad thing in the end, right?
